Hi, I'm Sophia. I am a Registered Non-Diet Dietitian. Throughout the past 12 years, I've counselled many people with a variety of conditions and illnesses and the number one thing I hear people say is that they want to lose weight. For the past three years, I have embarked on a journey of discovery that has led me to learn about Health at Every Size™, body positivity, and intuitive eating. I am currently working toward my Certified Body Trust Provider certificate through Be Nourished.
My interest in nutrition started sometime in my teens, but not exactly for the "right" reasons. I stepped on a scale at age 13 and thought I was getting too big and this started a negative relationship with my body until fairly recently. I would engage in harmful behaviours to keep my body at a certain size. I started studying nutrition so I could understand how food influences our health and also to provide sound advice to those seeking to change their eating habits. Little did I know that this would actually set off a more disordered eating pattern in me.
It wasn’t until I discovered Health at Every Size™ that I slowly started to change my thought patterns around my body. At first I thought this method would be beneficial to clients of mine, but did not realize that it would actually help me. As time went on, I realized I had to accept my body in order to do this work and lose the shame. It has been a work in progress and I still have "bad body days" but I have better tools to deal with them.
I have a passion for helping people learn to accept their bodies and heal their relationships with food. I struggled for many years with disordered eating and recognize the powerful hold that food and weight loss culture can have. I also know the shame and feelings of defeat due to not being the size that our society deems acceptable. It took me some time to realize that the problem was not me, but rather this diet obsessed culture that we live in.
The Non-Diet approach fits me and my ideals way better than the traditional one. I don’t have to be a certain size (smaller) to help others navigate this diet focused world we live in. And I can help you learn the tools and skills so that you can learn to accept your body, ditch the diet mentality and embrace who you are, free to enjoy the things in life that matter to you!
